Under the Showman’s Spell: Centre State with Hugo Hamlet
With electric blue hair and a twinkle in his eye that borders on mischievous, Hugo Hamlet is a performer who defies category. One moment, he’s moonwalking with uncanny ease; the next, he’s riffing at a piano or stepping into character. In a world full of pretentious showmen, Hamlet brings verve with zero drama. We step into his world to unpack the theatrics, instincts and rituals that make the magic.

Name your ultimate muse (and what you would borrow from their wardrobe?)
My ultimate muse is whomever is infront of me, I think there's nothing more fun than intimacy.
I would borrow their trousers.
Your path into performance - was it a stage-school affair or something more accidental? Tell us where it all began.
My mother and father were ballerinas, so while I ate bananas they would go bananas and so on and so forth… until I became the dancing monkey that I am today.

What’s your ritual before stepping into the spotlight?
Confusion.
Give us your ‘dress rehearsal’ philosophy. How does costume shift the performance?
I don’t know how exactly anything happens, but I know that a costume change does certainly change something. I think the more comfortable one is, the worse the performance.
Tell us a good joke.
Life!
